Things we love about family

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

We always knew we would travel back to SA after 12 months of living a nomad work lifestyle because May is the month two of our three adult children celebrate a birthday and 2023 was the big 30 celebration for our oldest. We couldn’t miss that!

Being in different time zones and countries forced us to find new ways to be together as a family. Just a few of the ways we stayed connected over Zoom while we were away:-

  • Pressed Play at the same time in three different locations so that we could watch the same movie together

  • Cooked dinner together each making what we wanted to and then sharing the recipes

  • Made pancakes in our pajamas all in our separate homes

  • Played games

  • Did ‘highs and lows rounds’ of sharing

  • Set up regular update chats

But there is nothing like a real hug and an in-person cuddle with a loved one so we hatched a plan to take co-ordinated leave and spend a week together at the sea. KZN’s warmer waters beckoned. Unfortunately, our youngest is on a teaching contract in South Korea and couldn't join us this time. {Yes, South Korea is on our Nomad work lifestyle year 2 or 3 lists. How could it not be?}

Spending time as adults together in a small apartment could be challenging, but we’ve got a common family language and ways of being with each other that make it easy, comfortable, and lovable.

Our recipe for success? The three C’s used in coaching:-

  1. Contract - Discuss upfront what boundaries, expectations or responsibilities will be at play.

  2. Container - The family unit is a container where we can all “come as you are”. There is no judgment, fixing, or expectations to ‘feel better” or act in a certain way.

  3. Check-In with love - we check in with each other by being honest, straightforward, direct, and open. When the time is right, we ask questions, share observations, provide feedback and make requests.

Yes, we actually do this, and it works!

We are often told that our happy family is different. Yes, we work through and clear family dramas or unsaid resentments because we all commit to our family. We use tools like active listening, self-accountability, curiosity, and love. Mostly it is all about love. It also helps that all of us either coach or teach so these skills come easily and are super useful.

“What’s next ?” is the question we’re now getting regularly.

Well, family is next. A visit to Gavin’s parents in the UK where we get to experience living in a retirement complex is our next invigorating experience. Stay tuned for more exciting adventures.

We took a walk down a side street of Seoul South Korea recently, which is in itself another whole article on its own as you don’t walk...
