Resilience - the modern equivalent of the compass

Resilience is the modern equivalent of the compass ~ it is one of life's most important navigational tools in today’s times. ~ Ingrid Lotze 2023 Being back in Johannesburg has been rough for 7t-shirtseach.

It started with @ingridlotze being retraumatised on the plane to Joburg by a man who decided to caress her arm as she slept next to him. It continued with a level of load shedding that was firstly a shock to the system, and secondly one of many causes of the frustration, aggression, and anger that was noticed immediately. And it was amplified by @ingridlotze and a friend being held at gunpoint by three criminals on their morning walk along the Spruit. It’s been hard, cold, busy, and mentally challenging - not only for Ingrid who has been at the coalface of the obstacles, but also for @gavinmoffat who has been the support and safe place since landing in South Africa. Mental wellness is a complex problem and there is no easy fix or simple solution. What @ingridlotze has chosen to do is:- - seek help - acknowledge the emotions and sit in them - practice loving kindness towards self

- be mindful - do release and relaxation exercises including breathing, yoga, meditation, and TRE - focus on a healthy lifestyle that includes sleep, food, and exercise

It has taken time, patience, and continuous purposeful choices and, because we teach resilience, we understand that it is a journey and the destination is not a single point of resilience. There are different tints and tones of the skill which enable us humans to withstand, adapt to, and possibly even thrive in the face of challenges. The toughest thing to do is also the key to resilience which is active participation in the situation rather than practicing endurance. Interestingly, the difference between 'need' and 'want' becomes brutally clear when resilience is required. Active emotional regulation, problem-solving, and making helpful choices are 'needed' ways to build resilience. What we 'want' however is to stay in bed instead.
