We came across something unexpected at the Phuket Aquaria, Thailand, a Moon Jellyfish and more intriguingly, examples of its growth cycle, which we have never seen before.
As you can see in the vid the jellyfish are almost entirely translucent and can grow to 25 to 40 cm (10–16 in) in diameter. “It feeds by collecting medusae, plankton, and mollusks with its tentacles, and bringing them into its body for digestion.”
They seemed helpless in the artificial current of the tanks, which they are because “It is capable of only limited motion, and drifts with the current, even when swimming.”
It is fascinating to watch because like most Jellyfish “it doesn’t have respiratory parts such as gills, lungs or trachea; it respires by diffusing oxygen from water through the thin membrane covering its body.”
Another weave in nature’s tapestry that is bountiful and inspiring to behold and as divers, the magic of the oceans never ceases to amaze us.
