What HOHO bus tours teach us about business strategy

As passionate advocates for Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) bus tours, my partner and I have always found them to be more than just a fun way to explore a new city. Recently, it struck me how much these tours parallel a successful business strategy. Yes, there's a lesson in those bustling city routes!

When we land in a new city, be it for leisure or our nomadic work lifestyle, a HOHO tour is often our first agenda item. It's a quick, comprehensive intro to the city, offering a glance at numerous sites that we might delve into later. It's like an efficient reconnaissance mission, covering a lot of ground in a short time. Think of it as a high-level overview of a market or an industry in the business world.

Using the tour without hopping off is akin to a rapid sightseeing approach – saving precious time while still hitting all the major points. In business, this translates to quickly understanding the lay of the land, identifying key areas without getting bogged down in the details initially. It’s about strategic overviews versus getting lost in the weeds.

The onboard commentary saves us from reading countless articles for each site – a metaphor for the streamlined, targeted insights that guide decision-making in business. It’s about using expert insights to inform our strategy, rather than trying to become an expert in every single area ourselves.

HOHO tours are safe and generally reliable, just like a well-planned business strategy should be. They offer a mapped-out journey with known milestones and flexibility to adjust as needed. In business, this represents our strategic plan – knowing where we're starting, where we want to end, and the key goals along the way.

Like the stops on a HOHO route, business strategies have points that can add to or detract from the journey, with plenty of distractions (or white noise) to keep things interesting. And, just as we can revisit a site on the tour, in business, we can refocus on successful initiatives, fine-tuning them based on our previous experiences.

In our nomad work lifestyle, a HOHO tour is an initial orientation, a shallow yet essential dive into a new environment. Similarly, in business, our first foray into a new market or strategy is about orientation – understanding the basics before diving deeper.

So, next time you’re struggling with a strategy, think of it as a HOHO tour. Map it out, be prepared to adapt, and enjoy the journey.

It might just be the ticket to navigating your way to success.
