The Garden of Dreams

We’ve visited Botanical Gardens in Mauritius, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore over the past 11 months. Much like the sea is for us, these gardens abound with smells, colours and variety that provide us with a fresh breath of life and energy.

The Garden of Dreams is situated right next to Thamel, a hip and happening (read touristy) part of Kathmandu. It's pretty much unnoticed from the outside and as you walk through the unremarkable gates you feel the city behind wash away.

This space is otherwise known as the Kaiser Mahal Garden and is the vision of Field Marshall Kaiser Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana (1892 – 1964). Its neoclassical pavilions pay homage to Nepal’s six seasons: Basanta (Spring), Grishma (Early Summer), Barkha (Summer Monsoon), Sharad (Early Autumn), Hemanta (Late Autumn) and Shishir(Winter).

Who can write this stuff better than the official website: “The Garden’s design has much in common with formal European gardens: paved perimeter paths, punctuated by pavilions, trellises, and various planting areas, surrounded by a sunken flower garden with a large pond at its center. It is an architectural landscape that encourages the visitor to stroll around and discover the Garden’s treasures from many different vantage points.”

It's a beautiful respite from the business that is Kathmandu although with its popularity, it is a little overrun with tourists, remembering that we call ourselves travellers so we’re not part of that lot :)

Nature is such a splendiferous thing and so too was the Garden of Dreams.
