Talk on the run - a lesson in resilience

Doing a virtual Talk for a large financial Institution was a great lesson in resilience and it ties in so beautifully with the Resilience Institute’s 2022 global resilience Report which showed that a certain amount of adversity can stimulate our resilience. To some degree, we need adversity to grow, rediscover or work in a new way and we can vouch for this. There is however a fine balance between adversity overload vs adversity that gets things moving. The key is how we deal with adversity and how much resilience we can muster. Not having a home base where there is a carefully crafted virtual speaker set-up, no event coordinators on call, or none of the fancy technology we had at home to set up a professional talk could be seen as adversity or a problem-to-be-solved. Some important components of resilience: 1. Be present and expand that presence into stabilising emotions and calming nerves

2. Use known and proven tools to deal with anxiety which may be around things not being ideal, or potentially going wrong

3. Don’t catastrophise adversity. Avoid getting wrapped up in the ‘it could’ and ‘I should’

4. Stay focused on your target which in this case was to deliver the best presentation and keep the clients coming back from more

5. Sleep and physical well-being is often taken as a given but then ignored in the action part of the plan. Overall health not only improves cognitive function, it also helps foster positivity and a healthy sense of humour. Not much is funny when you’re tired, bloated, or in pain, and seeing things with a sense of humour can help relieve tension 6. Bounce back to healthy action without lingering on adversity

7. Notice and acknowledge adversity, notice and acknowledge your emotional reactions and then take purposeful action to address the obstacles.

7t-shirts each’s nomadic lifestyle has strengthened our insight into aspects of resilience through the need to adapt quickly, be self-sufficient, problem-solve often, maintain mental toughness, and stay flexible. These skills are also not only useful for challenging situations in the workplace, but in life too.
