One choice away from a better life

James Clear said:- “At any moment, you are one good choice away from a meaningfully better life.”
In 2022, we (Ingrid Lotze and Gavin Moffat) made that choice. We sold our four-bedroom home, gave away 90% of our possessions, and embraced a nomadic work lifestyle. Our guiding principle? A simple sign on our bathroom mirror that read "No Space For Just In Case" (NSFJIC). This powerful mantra transformed our lives, showing us that letting go—of stuff, habits, and outdated beliefs—creates space for what truly matters. As children across South Africa return to classrooms after their summer break, parents are heading back to their regular work routines from Monday 13th Janaury. Other people went back to work straight after New Year and the “fresh start to the year” is perceived to be long past, but is it? It is never too late to say NO to the ‘same-old, same-old.’ January offers an invitation to break free from the weight of 'maybe someday.' Life only has room for what matters now and burnout, stress, and overcommitment shouldn’t fit.
Imagine simplifying life and releasing what no longer serves you. Picture living and working where life is filled with less plod and more enthusiastic nods, deeper connections, and lasting joy.
Consider this: research shows that one in three employees in South Africa experience burnout, while nearly 36% of workers feel excessive daily stress . What would the impact be if instead of repeating old patterns, you chose to let go of the things that clutter your time and energy? Research tells us that by eliminating clutter in your life you can create a life of meaning, joy, and intentionality. Tangible personal benefits of adopting a “No space for Just in Case” Mindset include:
· Immediate emotional relief
· Mental clarity
· Freedom of choice
· Sense of purpose
· New possibilities
· Personal transformation
This January, challenge yourself to say YES to new habits, bold ideas, and a year filled with adventurous potential. It is done through choosing simplicity—not as a restriction, but as a pathway to freedom. But where and how do I start? Release one thing per week.
Whether it’s a physical possession you’ve been holding onto, a commitment that no longer serves you, or even a mental worry you’ve been clinging to, let it go. By taking this small, intentional step, you’ll feel the immediate impact of creating space for what truly matters.
Sometimes the boldest changes start with a simple reflection so here are some powerful questions to help you reflect on the value of thing in your life:
1. Does this bring me joy or value?
2. What am I holding onto ‘just in case’?
3. What would I grab in an emergency?
4. What’s weighing me down physically, emotionally, or mentally?
5. Am I saying “yes” out of habit or obligation?
6. Does this align with the life I want to create?
7. If I didn’t already own this, would I acquire it now?
8. Am I holding onto the past at the expense of my future?
9. What could I gain by letting this go?
10. What’s one small step I can take today?
