Kathmandu - So many climbing gear shops



It kinda makes sense, we’re in Kathmandu and there are a couple of shops selling hiking and climbing gear. Wait, what we meant was a lot. Wait, what we meant was Kathmandu looks like the world's greatest concentration of shops selling hiking gear, like anywhere in the known universe.


Really, it’s understandable, there are so many hikers walking around in their shorts and t-shirts and, wait for it, hiking boots. There are also a lot of people walking around with new backpacks. How do we know they’re new? Cause they still have the tags on. Not only the on bags but some jackets too.


Many of the shops here are not just retailers, they’re wholesalers and manufacturers too. They are ‘manufacturing’ under their own label and of course, others. I would not like to hazard a guess at how much of the Salomon or The North Face kit here is genuine.


There is a great vibe in Kathmandu, everyone looks adventurous, like they’re about to head off to Khumbu Icefall after lunch. Never seen so many people (women and men) over 6 feet tall in one place either. Admittedly almost all of them are westerners. And so many of them are lythe or skinny and, damn there are a lot of hats and caps here. Go figure.


So, that’s it, our report on Kathmandu and the number of hiking shops. Well, an observation at least.
