Enjoy your laid-back work style!

Have you seen HP's new advert that happily looks Ahead to the hybrid future of working? #OurLifeInAnAd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVIFOJJhyRc

Actor Murphy Guyer rocks a three-piece suit and outmoded ideas on how to get ahead in business. He anchors "Work Happy," showing HP transforming the definition of "workplace" while boosting employee satisfaction and efficiency.

We often hear people say:-

- “Enjoy your laid-back work style” or

- “I'm so jealous”

when we tell them we're into month 4 of our nomad/work/lifestyle.

These are comments we hear often and it’s interesting to notice the defensiveness that arises within us when they’re said to us. We find ourselves responding with “I’m still working hard / normal hours” and “we’re not on holiday, we’re working just as hard as before we left SA, in fact sometimes harder to prove that distance makes no difference.”

We see and hear the assumptions made because we’re not ‘at home’ and not going into an office daily.

We’ve known for many years that it doesn’t matter where we work from. What has been confirmed through adopting our nomad/work/lifestyle is that nomad living is different and the same.

Same in that we will always need a bed, pillow, food, safety and a place to sit and work. The time zone, scenery, kitchen layout and local superette don’t matter.

Different in that we no longer need to think about the maintenance of our living space, caring for an animal/garden/car or paying for water and electricity. Because we have so few clothes we no longer worry about what to wear. @ingridlotze has no jewellery with her, so choosing matching earrings is a distant memory. Politics has become less important, as have crime rates and news.

Looking relaxed may have something to do with living in the moment. There are far fewer have-to's and shoulds and a lot more I-choose-tos.

We find ourselves:-

  • Being present to where we are, what we see/taste/smell/feel

  • Constantly learning and being curiousHonouring our mental and physical health each day and working with that

When @IngridLotze explained all this to a friend who is currently doing a co-active coaching course she gave a pearl of wisdom. She explained how they recently explored how "everything gets to be" and she said, “what you describe sounds exactly like that!”

Yes! Everything gets to be.

  • The people we meet ‘get to be’ who they are without our judgement

  • The place we are in ‘gets to be’ without us needing to fix or criticise it

  • Our friends and family ‘get to be’ without us fixing and rescuing them

  • We ‘get to be’ as we are each day, and we work with that

  • Our home country, its crime rates, politics, and the economy ‘gets to be’ without us worrying about it.

Yes. It is a more peaceful place. It is not a ‘laid-back work style’ because we need to keep our clients happier than they ever were before, because we’re in the spotlight. Our outlook and attitude towards each and every day is more relaxed.
