We went out for dinner as flexitarians - that are mostly vegetarian - and we chose a place that specialises in goat meat because we didn’t understand the Vietnamese signage. 🤦♀️ For Westerners and non-goat eaters, it is worth noting that the Vietnamese word for goat is ‘De’. Also worth noting is that you can enjoy cartilage and tendons from various animals in Vietnam. This is just one of the many unique aspects of Vietnamese cuisine. We learned that “Crispy Fried Chicken” could mean that chicken cartilage is the main ingredient and it is a popular dish. Insight: Food preferences can vary greatly from person to person and culture to culture. Staying open and curious about trying new things is a great part of learning in our nomad / work / lifestyle. Hindsight: Check the menu before choosing a place to eat and translate the ingredients before you sit down. Also - crispy tofu is delicious and the word to look out for is Đậu phụ.
Foresight (#traveltip): Using Google Maps to find places to eat has become easier than using Tripadvisor and it would seem that more people use it in certain countries. It is worth noting that many operations don’t market their establishments and few have reviewers of their food. Often these are known and loved local operations and the only way to find them is to follow the locals and see where they congregate and eat.
