A night to remember at the Owl Sky Lounge

A night to remember at the Owl Sky Lounge

We highly recommend making a plan to visit the Owl Sky Lounge hosted by the Owl Rescue Centre near Hartbeespoort Dam. It is an outing for the whole family and definitely a treat to be remembered. The Owl Sky Lounge is not just a unique dining experience; it's a pioneering fundraising initiative that supports these crucial wildlife conservation efforts in South Africa. 🦉

The experience includes a short ride offroad in one of their vehicles and a walk along wooden walkways that wind between the owl’s nesting boxes. After watching an exquisite African sunset, we enjoyed a yummy meal under a star-filled sky, while the owls had their meal of the day. Watching these majestic birds swoop down to feed was a sight to behold and truly unforgettable.

Brendan, the dedicated Owl Rescuer, shared stories that captivated us, shedding light on the vital work the sanctuary does. Annually, they rescue and rehabilitate over 1,000 owls, nurturing them back to health until the birds can thrive on their own. He reminded us of the growing challenges faced by Africa’s birds of prey. Recent research highlights an alarming extinction crisis for these magnificent creatures. While this wasn't part of the official research, the impact of cellphone towers on birds of prey, as shared by Brendan, is a significant concern. From January to June 2024 alone, the Owl Rescue Centre conducted 74 cell tower rescues for Vodacom.

Visiting the Owl Sky Lounge is a powerful way to support conservation while enjoying a truly magical evening. A big thank you to Nicky Herbst and Anton Herbst for organising this special outing. Gavin Moffat and I are deeply grateful for the opportunity to witness and support such an important cause.
