“A door asks you to live between was and will be” *

*Excerpt from a poem by Betsy Johnson

Our continued personal growth hinges on our willingness to close one door in order to open another thereby stepping into new spaces and opportunities. As the poem by Betsy Johnson says - “a door asks you to live between was and will be.”

A hinged or otherwise movable barrier that allows entry into, and exit from an enclosure is a metaphor for the choices we make in our lives. When a door swings open before us, it's an invitation to move forward and take advantage of the opportunity.

At times, we find ourselves lingering on the threshold, reluctant to leave behind the known and step into the unknown, but it is helpful to know that doors sometimes close for our own protection and they also close when the time is right for us to embark on a new journey. Trust that passing through a new door is the right decision.

Throughout our lives, countless doors present themselves, leading us to new relationships, career paths, friendships, and wellsprings of creativity. Our lives up to this point are the result of all the doors we have either closed behind us or walked through, and our continued growth depends on our willingness to keep closing and opening doors thereby moving into new spaces. The trick is to remember not to dwell too long on the closed door, for in doing so, we may overlook the one that has opened before us.

--------------------------------- What the metaphor of doors teaches us

  1. The choices we make daily impact the course of our lives.

  2. Some things come to an end for our own protection and others end when the time is right for us to embark on something new.

  3. Opportunities are seldom completely closed to you. We often close them ourselves firstly by our behavior and secondly because of our beliefs.

  4. An attitude of positive expectancy is helpful in opening up opportunities and doors in life.

  5. Be at peace if something ends or an opportunity closes on you. Start looking for the next step.

  6. Trust that making a shift from one place/thing to another is the right decision.

  7. Our continued growth in life depends on our willingness to keep moving on to new things.

POEM

[a door asks you to live]

By Betsy Johnson

a door asks you to live

between was and

will be. hey. you.

do not stand there

pounding on a door

that has been bricked

in. turn. walk on.

into the wild new opening.
